Women's Group Petitions to End Chris Brown's Upcoming Performances in South Africa

A South African women's rights group, [Women for Change], has launched an online petition against Chris Brown to stop the singer from performing in the nation in December.

After Chris' 11:11 concert sold out at Johannesburg's FNB Stadium (94,000-person capacity) in under two hours, the venue added a second concert date, which also did incredible numbers. This prompted the women's advocacy group to protest his appearance in the country because of his history of violence against women—therefore launching a petition on Oct. 4 to prevent the singer's performances. Thus far, the petition reportedly has over 28,000 signatures.

The protest of Brown comes almost in conjunction with the Investigation Discovery network's documentary, Chris Brown: A History of Violence, which airs on Oct. 27. According to Billboard, the project will feature an unidentified woman who alleges Brown abused her.

The 11:11 singer was expected to be the next Michael Jackson, yet Brown's career took a nose dive when he was arrested for assaulting his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, in 2009, when he was 17. The assault has heavily followed his legacy as an artist, among other allegations of abuse. The 35-year-old artist explained during an interview with the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast that his path in life and entertainment has been difficult, but he's persevered through it all.

Although Brown has admitted to his wrongdoings and personal struggles throughout his career, it's been difficult for him to shake his reputation of abuse and being the "bad guy" in pop and R&B. In his documentary, Chris Brown: Welcome to My Life, he opened up about his situation with Rihanna, saying he "felt like a fucking monster."

Nevertheless, Brown has continued to make history in the music industry. The Virginia native is the only artist to chart on the Hot 100 hits for 20 consecutive years. Brown surpassed all R&B singers, becoming the first star to have 50 Top 40 hits, over 100 Hot 100 hits, and 20 RIAA multi-Platinum hits. Brown has sold over 140 million albums worldwide. His 11:11 Tour reportedly has no sponsors and is expected to gross at least $90 million. According to 103.5 The Beat, Brown grossed $9 million after only three shows during the North American leg of the tour.
