Whoopi Goldberg paid tribute to her former Sister Act co-star, Maggie Smith, after Maggie passed away at 89 last week. Whoopi stated on social media, "Maggie Smith was a great woman and a brilliant actress. I still can't believe I was lucky enough to work with the 'one-of-a-kind.' My heartfelt condolences go out to the family… RIP."

Before Maggie's death, Whoopi shared with Loose Women that she wanted the veteran actress to join the cast of Sister Act III. She stated, "I want to let Maggie Smith know that I'm holding the part of Mother Superior for you." Whoopi continued, "Because I just can't do it with anybody but you!" Goldberg assured Maggie if you need me to come over here and shoot it and do whatever we need to do—we will do whatever you want us to do, but we don't want to do it without you, Maggie."

Sadly, Maggie will not be able to rejoin the cast for the production of part III after passing away in a London hospital last Friday.

Smith was a versatile actress, also known for her role as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, in Downton Abbey, and in many other films.

Her death comes only months shy of the recent Sister Act II 25-year reunion, which aired on The View. She was unable to attend personally, yet the star actress called in to share her fondest memories of the cast and her co-stars.

Goldberg confirmed during the reunion that part three is in pre-production.

Job well done, Maggie.

Rest in peace.
