Neo-Soul singer Angie Stone died early Saturday morning in a car accident in Montgomery, Alabama. The 63-year-old music industry veteran was reportedly the only person who died after the sprinter she and her eight-member team were traveling in rolled multiple times before being hit by a semi-truck.
According to the New York Post, "The Alabama Highway Patrol said in a news release that the 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van turned over on Interstate 65 about 4:25 a.m. Saturday before being hit by a 2021 Freightliner Cascadia truck driven by a 33-year-old man from Texas."
Stone's representative, Deborah R. Champagne confirmed the news with TMZ, explaining that R&B star was traveling to perform at the CIAA basketball tournament in Baltimore when the crash occurred. The Grammy-nominated singer went live on social media days before her passing, excitedly telling her fans, "It's been so long since we chopped it up!" She talked about her upcoming stop in Alabama and her performance for the CIAA basketball tournament and praised Philadelphia for winning the Super Bowl! Stone alerted her fans that she'd bring her hot sauce and coffee products to Baltimore to sell.
The highly talented singer, rapper, and songwriter came into the music industry in the 1970s as the founding member of the group Sequence. While speaking with The Breakfast Club's co-host, Charlamagne Tha God, he credited the singer for being a rap pioneer; Stone then explained Sequence's place in music history; the singer stated, "The first female group period to do an original rap record—to do a rap record to garner the world. Stone continued, "We had our neighborhood rappers, we had our New York City rappers, but Sequence was the world's rappers! Sequence's hit song "Funk You Up" has been sampled and interpolated by Dr. Dre, Erykah Badu, and Bruno Mars."
Angie joined the R&B group Vertical Hold in the early 90s before going solo in 1999 with her debut album, Black Diamond. She put out many hit songs during her solo career, including "Wish I Didn't Miss You," "Brotha," and "No More Rain."
Entertainment industry tributes have been pouring in on social media since the announcement of her death. Her daughter, Diamond, also a music artist, has shared several posts since her mother's passing.
Stone also has a son, Michael Archer, who is also a musician, and two grandchildren.
