Despite holding the world record of 10.65 in the women's 100-meter dash, upon competing in the Olympics, Sha'Carri Richardson fell short of winning the Gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Sha'Carri finished second to St. Lucia's Julien Alfred, the first athlete to win an Olympic medal for her country. Alfred secured the Gold with 10.72 seconds. Richardson's running partner, Melissa Jefferson, finished third.
Sha'Carri's upset was genuinely unexpected. After her impressive win at the 2023 World Championships, where she clinched the Gold by defeating Jamaica's Shericka Jackson and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Sha'Carri was a strong favorite for the win. Fraser-Pryce's withdrawal from the100 meter finals in Paris added to the surprise of how the race concluded.
While Sha'Carri's bid for the Gold in the 100-meter dash didn't materialize, she still has a shot at glory in the Women's 4x100 relay.
Despite this year's upset, Sha'Carri's resilience shines through. The sprinter has worked tirelessly to restore her confidence and performance after being banned from the 2020 Olympics due to a positive cannabis test during the trials. Richardson's performance took a hit after the 2020 incident, but she's back and fighting. Her journey is a testament to the power of resilience and determination.
There's more to celebrate from Team USA track and field. Noah Lyles won the Gold medal in the men's 100 meters, and Fred Kerley won the bronze medal tonight.
The United States set a world record Friday in the mixed 4x400 meter relay. The team of Vernon Norwood, Shamier Little, Bryce Deadmon, and Kaylyn Brown finished the four laps with a blazing time of 3 minutes, 7.41 seconds, breaking a world record that was set just last year, per WBAL. Yet, the team took second place in the finals. Gabby Thomas and Noah Lyles' advancement to the 200-meter finals is another reason to stay tuned for track and field.
Simone Biles won her 10th Olympic Gold medal in the vault and all-around. The women's gymnastics team also won the team gold medal. Biles will compete in the women's balance beam and floor exercises.
Stay tuned.
