Mass Shooting Claimed the Lives of Ten People In Monterey Park, California: Suspect Located

Ten people were killed, and several were injured from gunfire at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in the predominantly Asian Community of Monterey Park, California, Saturday night while celebrating the Lunar New Year. Local authorities identified the gunman as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran. Law enforcement found Tran dead inside a van in a nearby city with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to the LA Times, after the first shooting, Tran went to the Lai Lai Ballroom & Studio in the city of Alhambra armed with the intent to shoot more people but was disarmed by the patrons. Authorities have been unable to determine a motive for the killings, considering that Tran is Asian as well. Los Angeles authorities will continue to investigate the situation.

This shooting followed the May 2022 Taiwanese church shooting in Laguna Woods, California, where David Chou, 68, gunned down one church member, Dr. John Cheng, and wounded five others. He reportedly targeted the church members because of political differences between China and Taiwan.

A vigil is in place at the Monterey Park Civic Center to honor the victims.
