Mariah Carey announced to People that her mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, died on the same day. The 55-year-old songstress confirmed the news Monday, explaining that her loved ones passed away this weekend.

The singer said, "My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day," the Grammy-winning singer said.

The singer continued, "I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed," adds Mariah. "I appreciate everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time."

The cause of Mariah's mother's death has not been revealed. However, her sister Alison reportedly suffered from drug abuse, HIV, and other health issues. Alison reportedly had a record of prostitution. According to Daily Mail, Alison went into hospice care three weeks before her death. Despite years of a fractured relationship, in 2016, she made a public declaration to Mariah, asking her famous sister for help; Alison stated, "Mariah, I love you, and I desperately need your help-please don't abandon me like this."

The "Daydream" singer reportedly had a strained relationship with her brother and older sister due to her sister's drug addiction and has not been in regular contact with them over the years. Her siblings were reportedly angry with the Grammy-award-winning singer for how she depicted them in her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey. Alison reportedly filed a $1.25 million lawsuit against Mariah for emotional distress following the release of her memoir. The older sister said the "Vision of Love" singer was "heartless, vicious, vindictive, and despicable" for publicly humiliating her in the book.

However, Mariah shared some memorable public moments with her mother, Patricia, a classically trained singer from the prestigious Juilliard School in New York. For an ABC Christmas special, Mariah shared the stage with her mom, singing "O Come All Ye Faithful." The singer also spoke about her family's disconnect through her music over the years. Her song "Through the Rain" was reportedly symbolic of the complications her parents faced during their interracial relationship, which the songstress spoke about throughout her career.

Mariah and her brother Morgan are the last remaining family members. Their father, Alfred Carey passed away in 2002.
