The family of Frankie Beverly, from [Frankie Beverly and Maze], announced his death. The singer, born Howard Stanley Beverly, was 77. He had reportedly been battling a throat illness at the time of his passing. According to Distractify, he told Black Doctor.org earlier this year he's only had throat problems and clarified, "I've never had any cancer or anything like that." The Philadelphia native had a plethora of hits, such as "Before I Let Go," "Joy and Pain," "We Are One," "Can't Get Over You," "Golden Time of Day," and "Silky Soul," which he reportedly dedicated to the late soul singer, Marvin Gaye.
His family stated the following about his death: "He lived his life with pure soul, as one would say, and for us, no one did it better," the family wrote. He lived for his music, family, and friends. Love one another as he would want that for us all."
Frankie was known for wearing signature caps during his performances. He was a beloved singer whose career began in the 1970s. "Before I Let Go" was an R&B classic that was sampled multiple times and even remade by Beyoncé.
The band performed a farewell show in Philadelphia this July, closing their careers after more than 50 years in music to a sold-out crowd at the Dell Music Center. According to WHYY, Susan Slawson, commissioner of the Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department, "We sold 5,200 tickets, and we have a lawn area that holds about 500. There wasn't a ticket to be found."
The Grammy award-nominated artist leaves behind eleven projects, including live performance albums and an undeniable fan base.
Long live Frankie Beverly!
