L.A. City Council President Resigns After Audio of Racist Remarks About a Council Man's Son Leaked

Los Angeles' City Council president, Nury Martinez, resigned after racist remarks she made during a council meeting were recorded and leaked to the public. Martinez, who is Latina, said the following remarks against a fellow council member, Mike Bonin, and his adopted black son, such as "fuck that guy, he's with the blacks! She referred to his son as "like a monkey." Martinez also called Bonin a "little bitch."

Per the LA Times, Martinez said that Bonin is the City Council's fourth Black member and talked about his parenting by saying, "They're raising him like a little white kid," Martinez said. "I was like, this kid needs a beatdown. Let me take him around the corner and then I'll bring him back." During the conversation, Martinez also referred to Bonin's child as "changuito," which is a racist connotation for a Black person. (Mike Bonin & his son pictured below)

Supposedly the president's rage was due to her concern that, in the future, Latino districts and neighborhoods may not receive the economic assets needed due to upcoming proposals. Latino populations make up nearly 50 percent of the city, and their current mayor is also Latino, Eric Garcetti.

Martinez commented on her behavior: "I take responsibility for what I said and there are no excuses for those comments. I'm so sorry," Martinez said in a statement. "I sincerely apologize to the people I hurt with my words."
