Actor John Amos, who played the role of the father, James Evans Sr., on the hit show Good Times, has passed away at 84 in Los Angeles.

His son, Christopher Amos, confirmed the news with the statement, "It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned." Christopher continued, "He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold...Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor."

James did exceptional work in various productions, including Good Times, Coming to America, Roots, and West Wing, earning him three Emmy Awards and six Emmy nominations.

Good Times was James' breakthrough television role—he starred alongside actress Esther Rolle as they raised three children in a Chicago housing project before his untimely death in a car accident.

The New Jersey native received critical acclaim for portraying the highly strong-willed slave, Kunta Kinte, who was sent to America during the Atlantic Slave trade in Alex Haley's television series Roots.

Amos went on to perfect his role in Coming to America as a pretentious restaurant owner and father, Cleo McDowell. The seasoned actor went on to make another great impression as Percy "Fitz" Fitzwallace on West Wing.

The 84-year-old also found acclaim in theater acting as well. The former Good Times star wrote, produced, and starred in Halley's Comet, a one-man stage play.

John leaves behind two children and an excellent pallet of work.

He will be missed!
