Coach Geno Auriemma led the University of Connecticut (UConn) to its 12th NCAA title on Sunday! The Lady Huskies defeated South Carolina in the NCAA finals with a score of 82-59.
Auriemma is recognized as the winningest coach in women's college basketball history, surpassing the late Pat Summitt, who led Tennessee to eight NCAA titles. Kim Mulkey has won three NCAA titles at Baylor and one at LSU, while Dawn Staley has claimed three titles with South Carolina. Muffet McGraw achieved two titles at Notre Dame.
Auriemma has been UConn's head coach since 1985 and won the school's first title in 1995. Prior to this season, the team's last NCAA win was 2016.
Last season, Iowa defeated UConn in the Final Four, 71-69. Despite this setback, the team's star player, Paige Bueckers, committed to another season with the team in hopes of winning a championship before entering the WNBA draft. Bueckers is projected to be the No. 1 pick and will enter the draft with the Dallas Wings.
Coach Auriemma has coached and mentored numerous talented athletes, including college stars Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Maya Moore, Breanna Stewart, and Tina Charles.
Way to go, UConn!
