Cissy Houston, Whitney Houston's Mother and Gospel Great, Died at 91
Cissy Houston, the Grammy-award-winning gospel artist and the late mother of music icon Whitney Houston, has passed away at 91. Cissy's daughter-in-law, Pat Houston, confirmed to USA Today that Cissy died at her home while under hospice care after suffering from Alzheimer's. Cissy's contributions to gospel music left an indelible mark on the genre.
Pat released the following statement: "Our hearts are filled with pain and sadness. We lost the matriarch of our family." Pat continued, "Mother Cissy has been a strong and towering figure in our lives. A woman of deep faith and conviction, who cared greatly about family, ministry, and community. Her more than seven-decade career in music and entertainment will remain at the forefront of our hearts."
Cissy was instrumental in developing Whitney as an artist and helping to launch her career, making her one of the biggest music icons. Before her demise in 2012, Whitney won 6 Grammys, sold over 220 million records worldwide, and won 22 American Music Awards. Cissy's own career spanned through several decades, during which she won multiple awards and accolades for her musical talents.
Cissy came from a musical family and had a rather stellar career. She performed with the band [The Sweet Inspirations] alongside her niece, recording artist Dionne Warwick. Their group sang backup for acts such as Otis Redding, Elvis Presley, and Jimi Hendrix.
Her life was dramatically altered after Whitney's untimely death in 2012, followed by the death of Whitney's daughter, Bobbi Christina, in 2015, which was considered a suspicious death and almost identical to the way Whitney died [in a bathtub, with multiple drug substances in her system].
Fans and fellow stars have been sharing social media tributes about Mother Houston, Whitney, and Bobbi Kristina reuniting in heaven again.
May they all rest in the sweetest peace.
