Rapper Quavo from the Migos released the song "Tender," which poked fun at Chris Brown by alluding to the singer's alleged drug problem and domestic violence incidents. The song was also an overshare about his romantic dealings with Chris' ex-girlfriend [Karrueche Tran]. The song mocked the singer about having access to Karrueche when she refused to go back to Chris.
Chris stepped outside of his musical genre of R&B and responded to Quavo's insults with a rap diss track, "Weakest Link." Brown dealt some heavy lyrical blows to Quavo, explaining that he was unconcerned about his dealings with Karrueche while enlightening the rapper that his former girlfriend Saweetie cheated on him with Chris and shared personal information about the rap star with Brown.
Brown pulled no punches when he mentioned the 2022 death of Quavo's group member, Takeoff, saying that people wished Quavo died instead of Takeoff, "Crazy how when he died, everybody really wished it was you instead." Brown, also known by the moniker "Breezy," told his rival that he was the weakest link in the Migos group and his music was "trash." Breezy threatened to put the "Bad and Boujee" rapper on a ventilator while reminding him that he, too, had a domestic violence charge for beating a woman on an elevator, which was caught on camera. He closed out the song by stating, "I'll run yo' as* through the wringer, n!gga. You just got bodied by a singing n!gga. B!tch."
While Chis' message in "Weakest Link" hasn't necessarily garnered the applause of fellow creatives, his skillfulness as a rapper has undoubtedly caught the attention of both celebrities and fans alike. The song is reminiscent of battle rap songs from the '90s and early '2000s.
Singer Jill Scott was blown away by Breezy's ability to make a rap song of that caliber. She stated on X, "How does ANYBODY sing like THAT? Dance, look, Act, and Rap… like THAT? Beyond gifted. It appears exceptional people have to go through exceptional 🔥. There's nothing to debate." While some social media users criticized her comments, reminding her that Chris has been charged with domestic violence in the past, Jill gave the following statement: "My Mother's ex husband was a mean, violent human AND he could lay foundation better than anyone in my city. What he did with cement was awe inspiring. We got away. He got a raise and praise for his ability. God dealt with the rest." The singer drew a connection between trauma and behavior, explaining that she and her mother eventually forgave her stepfather.
Jill posted again stating, "Look. Years of prayer, therapy, self reflection, & making every effort to keep my feet on the ground has made me compassionate for other human beings. People go through and do terrible. We say we believe in God ; pray for enlightenment. We ARE a living testimony."
50 Cent also weighed in on the song on Instagram, encouraging Quavo to react. "Oh my God, I just heard this. If Quavo doesn't come with some heat, it's a wrap. First, the Fatboys break up, now this!" he stated.
Saweetie seemingly responded to "Weakest Link" on her Instagram story, stating, "Whew! Chile." "Let me go rewrite these nani verses." Quavo shared a subtle photo on his Instagram story in response to the diss. Nicki Minaj reportedly weighed in, too, sharing a meme on X after the release of "Weakest Link."
